Game Jam Release
Wizard in Montreal Game Launch
Game informations
This game was created in the context of a Game Jam, the McGame Jam 2025 from the University of McGill. It was made in under 48h by a team of 7 under the name of Beginner's Pot Luck:
- Shawn Roggero;
- Jacob Alarie-Brousseau;
- Antoine Gamache;
- Jade Cannatelli-Lafrance;
- Catherine Boucher;
- Quoc Huy Do;
- Jean-François Carpentier
This game is a doom-like inspired in some ways by Noita and The Binding of Isaac in which we have 2D assets in a 3D environment and the theme was Lost & Found. We also had some diversifiers we could implement in our game, such as:
- Gacha Galore (Have gacha mechanics like loot boxes or randomized reward)
- Monochrome (Use of black, white and a primary color, including shades of those)
- Dimensional Deception (Visual style that tricks perception of 2D and 3D)
The game didn't win any awards, as we didn't have much of innovative gameplay, but our team is very happy of the result as our game is very fun, engaging and quite polished for a game jam. We are also planning into updating the game to have something that's more like the vision we had and also by fixing some of the bugs or just adding what people wanted from it, we will keep the original version of the game and add updated files along the original.
Features of this game
Gameplay
The game is similar to a classic doom-like game, where you control your character using W-A-S-D and the left mouse button to shoot. We also make use of the buttons 1-2-3-4 to equip an item found in the game or to trade it with the one in the slot of the pressed key. 1-2-3-4 are also used when your character is dead so you can keep an item for your next run (you'll have to find your dead body).
Items found in game will apply some effect on your projectile, which is used to kill the enemies, and all effect stack together, so more of the same enchantment will improve itself more and more.
Dying in this game will make your next run a bit easier, as you can leave an item for your next run.
There is two type of enemies, range enemies, which won't move and shoot projectile that deals 10 damage to you, and there is melee enemies that rushes towards you dealing 15 damage when close enough.
Your character have 100 health points and cannot restore his hp during the game, so be careful as this is pretty hardcore.
Design
The narration of our game is very simple, as you have lost something and you're trying to take it back, but we also made it a bit funny by adding Montreal into it.
The map are not procedurally generated, but rather fixed level, so it is possible to remember them (for now). You'll have to find keys and sacrifice an enchantment to pick it up to be able to go to the next section of the level out of 5 doors.
The room are quite small, so be careful not to be attacked from behind
Art
All the environment is 3D will a filter that makes it look pixelized. Also, all projectile, enemies and UI are 2D and made as pixel art.
Since we use Montreal as a funny visual theme, you might find some basement assets, microwave, mini-fridge, etc.
There are some painting in the game... and they are real pictures of Montreal
